Kirk Defends Bush, Attacks Kerry and Dean

Congressman Mark Kirk (R.IL) defended President Bush in an op-ed column he wrote for the Washington Times. In the column, Kirk decried “prominent liberal figures” including Gov. Howard Dean and Sen. Ted Kennedy for “foul rumor mongering,” and he called upon Sen. John Kerry to repudiate their statements. Kirk accused the Democrats of “peddling cheap conspiracy theories” against the President.

Kirk’s opponent Lee Goodman said Kirk’s comments were consistent with Kirk’s record of partisan support for the President. “As the Congress considers whether to appoint an independent commission to investigate whether Bush misled the country, Mark Kirk has already made up his mind,” Goodman said. “Kirk voted for the war, he voted not to investigate the administration’s handling of 9/11, and now he is smearing Senators who are trying to get at the truth. It’s pretty clear Kirk is more concerned with the President’s image than he is with finding out what really happened.”

Goodman and Kirk are both running for Representative from the 10th District in Illinois, a district that has a history of independent voting.
