Goodman Builds with Habitat for Humanity
Lee Goodman, Democratic candidate for U.S. House of Representatives (10th District, Illinois), and his wife, Nancy, joined with other volunteers this past weekend to help build affordable housing. The project was sponsored by Glencoe Interfaith Builders, a local group that works in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity. The Goodmans contributed their time and newly acquired construction skills as part of a Mitzvah Day public service effort at their synagogue, Am Shalom.
The construction site is located in North Chicago, which is in the 10th Congressional District. It is supervised by Americorps volunteers, who receive a small stipend from the federal government that allows them to spend a year working in service to the nation. These young people have made an extraordinary commitment to their community and their country. I am proud to have worked beside them, and to learn of their experience. Goodman said. But it is unfortunate that under the current administration, this program is not receiving more support. It is difficult for young people to find jobs right now. By funding programs like this, we could help them find work and gain skills, and we would help provide much needed low-cost housing at the same time.
