Kirk Predicts Major Decline in U.S. Economy Says Americans Should Learn Chinese
Mark Kirk (Republican 10th District, IL) in an unusual hour-long speech, told the U.S. Congress that if the trends we have experienced during his years in office continue, the U.S. economy will soon be eclipsed by that of China. Our country has been the home of the worlds largest economy for 130 years, but that is about to change, said Kirk. He also warned Congress to prepare for the day when the U.S. will be overshadowed both economically and militarily, and he suggested that U.S. foreign policy shift to accommodate our imminent second-nation status. Kirk also said more Americans should learn to speak Chinese.
Lee Goodman, Kirks Democratic opponent in the November election, expressed surprise at Kirks pessimistic view of Americas future. Its not clear whether Kirk is trying to frighten us into a new arms race with China or is preparing us for a declining standard of living. Either way, he seems not to have much confidence in the American people, said Goodman. Bush and Kirk have damaged our economy, but the damage can be undone by implementing new policies. Its not time to cut and run. Now is the time to reshape our country for renewed growth and prosperity. Confidence, not defeatism, should be guiding our nation. I still believe Americas best days are ahead.
