Goodman Says Ashcroft Should Retake Bar Exam
Although lawyers normally only have to pass the bar exam once in their careers, an exception should be made for Attorney General John Ashcroft, said Lee Goodman, Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress from the 10th District in Illinois. Mr. Ashcrofts recent comments about torturing prisoners cast serious doubt about whether he has the minimal competence required to be an attorney, said Goodman. He displays a complete misunderstanding of the Constitution and its framework for protecting individual rights. In refusing to provide information requested by Congress about the torture, Ashcroft has also shown a lack of comprehension of even the most basic concepts of separation of powers. Lawyers have the responsibility to uphold the laws and safeguard the Constitution. Mr. Ashcroft seems not grasp those fundamental underpinnings of his own profession. The public has the right to know that our Attorney General has at least the level of expertise that we require of lawyers who handle traffic tickets."
